CITY AROUND ME
It’s a story of her bonding with her surroundings created of materials and forms, recreated as an artist to convey emotions. She felt a spiritual connection with the materials. Her artistic journey stems out from the notion of a clash between ‘missing and seeking’.
She says, “I make a home out of a house which might not be mine but, I make it as mine as I believe home is the individual space and that make me what I am.” This feeling of ‘what is mine’ is a continuous chain of experiences leading towards the realization of moulding a home. How a home is being moulded and the feeling of belongingness certainly evolves from her childhood itself. Mediums she acquainted and employ to express are painting, printmaking, embroidery and the Woodcut. The chiaroscuro nature of woodcut influenced her to transform two dimensional forms into three dimensional , and then her sculptural practice began.
She was born and brought up in a place far from the winds of development at that time i.e., the north-eastern city of Agartala, Tripura. The feeling of ‘belongingness’ and a ‘connection with mother earth’ came through childhood play time with mud and living in a mud house. However, the meaning of such feelings changed when she visited Mumbai and then shifted to Baroda to pursue further artistic career. She felt that, the homes were neither fragile, nor the earth feels softer any longer. The environment was full of the geometric forms of modern architecture which made her its perfervid observer, seeing everything with fresh eyes. The cityscape at different hours of day till night and its three-dimensionality creates a dialogue of forms, texture and chiaroscuro, including the creation of pocket-like visuals by the surrounding architecture.
She creates what she miss in her surroundings, to fill the gap between what she have and what she don’t. In her words,”I might not live anymore in my childhood home but I transformed to home whatever I had, wherever I shifts. It is exactly what I try to bring at my works as well.”

The revealed and hidden space belong together. I loved that phenomenon most . And the size and modeling showing artist’s intimacy, notion and relation regarding the subject, it connects.. all the best artist.
